Amazon.com Review
The American-based company Lodge has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. No other metal is as long-lasting and works as well for spreading and retaining heat evenly during cooking. Lodge's Logic line of cookware comes factory pre-seasoned with the company's vegetable oil formula, and is ready to use right out of the box.

This professional-size cast-iron grill/griddle combo from the Lodge Logic series measures 20 by 10-1/2 inches (with an actual cooking surface of 19-1/4 by 8-1/2 inches), serious enough to straddle either a campfire or two burners on your stovetop. The reversible feature of this crowd-pleasing cooker means you can use the smooth side for cooking flapjacks, eggs, and grilled cheese sandwiches, and the ridged grill side for hamburgers, steaks, and sausages. A slight slope drains fat into a generous grease gutter, and the two loop-style handles provide safe transport. After the meal is done, simply scrub the cast iron with a stiff brush and hot water, no soap, and dry immediately. Lodge covers the sturdy griddle with a lifetime limited warranty against defects. This pan is guaranteed to pass down from one generation to the next. --Ann Bieri

5 out of 5 stars Slicker than snot after 2 or 3 uses.   January 8, 2009

This griddle is superb. It fit fine over my two burners and I actually got it from Target so I didn't have to worry about packaging (though it's CAST IRON- it's not like it's gonnna chip). I kind of wish it were an inch or two wider for more food, but that's my greed talking. I'm a pretty big guy so moving around an extra 5-10lbs of weight wouldn't be an issue for me.

As far as performance I am utterly satisfied. Even heat distribution (with a few degrees cooler in the exact center, which can't be avoided and just needs to be kept in mind), and great cast iron non-stick love. For the most part the reviews have seemed to join me in lauding this tool's non-stick qualities, and to those who have complained about it sticking horribly I would say a few words.

1. LEARN HOW TO CARE FOR AND COOK WITH CAST IRON. THIS IS NOT SOME NANCY-BOY TEFLON COATED ALUMINUM GRIDDLE. IT IS THE REAL THING.

2. When you first get it there, yes, it is pre-seasoned, and that gives you a great base to work with, but once you have scrubbed it with hot water (no soap) and dried it in the oven or on a burner, I would give it a quick spray over with Pam front and back, wipe it down, and put it in the oven to bake for an hour at 350 degrees. That will really help you out.

3. A little quick spray of cooking spray the first 2 or 3 times you use it really help finish the non-stick qualities, and after that you will have eggs gliding around on the surface like it was the ice capades.

4. Preheating is your friend. Cast iron needs a minute or two of preheating to get all that iron nice and ready for your food. The thickness and heaviness of the iron is precisely why it gives good heat distribution; this also makes preheating necessary. The hotter you plan to cook with, the more it needs to preheat. Pancakes? 1 or 2 minutes. Searing Steak? 5 minutes or more. I usually just set it to preheat before I start mixing or prepping whatever I am going to cook.

5. Finally, if you have taken the time to prep your griddle, preheat, and things are gliding around like they should- cleanup is a breeeeeeze. With one exception all I have had to do is take a papertowel, wipe the bits of food and oil that I have still on the pan away, and then add a quick spray of pam and wipe it again with a new one. I do this while the griddle is still somewhat warm. Only once have I had to take it to the sink and scrub it with hot water and the brush- the wife left some food on it for an hour or so and it dried up and crusted on the surface.

Suffice it to say, this griddle/grill has been an amazing addition to my kitchen, and I see myself using this until the end of my life (unlike non-stick where you have to throw it out after 5 years or so).

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't heat evenly   January 7, 2009
Mom of twins (Northern VA)
This griddle does not heat evenly at all! I have tried using it twice and have given up, as I am tired of ruining perfectly good food. Both times I set the burners on medium-low heat and tried to make pancakes. If part of a pancake was over the burner and part of it was not, the part of the pancake that was over the burner would literally burn black and the other part would be raw. I thought that perhaps this was because I am using a flat-top electric range, but I read another review where someone complained of having the same problem with a gas range. I would really like to know the secret of all the people who are happy with this product, b/c I had such high hopes and am sorely disappointed! :(

5 out of 5 stars Best Griddle/Grill Ever   January 7, 2009
A. Brisben (Los Angeles, CA)
I bought one of these a year ago and enjoy it so much that I bought another one for a friend. For the price, it's the best griddle/grill in my opinion. If you don't know how to take care of cast iron and aren't much of a cook, then you might be better off with some electric non-stick solution. Cast iron is favored by most cooks as it is non-stick, it browns the best, and it naturally imparts iron to your food & contributes to nutrition. Cast iron is very easy to care for, but it is also very easy to mess up. Just use a dedicated scrub brush that hasn't touched detergent, scrub under water, pat dry, & apply a thin coat of oil. It will last for years and become a family treasure. I recommend getting the grill press, too, for perfect breakfast meats, burgers, and other grill items like steaks. The griddle side makes perfect pancakes and eggs. The grill side isn't as good as a charcoal grill, but is great for when you are only cooking a couple things and don't want to deal with the grill. The grill side tends to take longer than anticipated. Also, when using either side you want to make sure it's been enough time for the metal to heat up evenly before cooking. I've even taken this grill/griddle camping and put it on the Coleman propane stove. If you like to cook, this is the griddle for you.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a lot of different foods   December 27, 2008
Don Jr (Rochester, NY USA)
Not only great for breakfast meats, pancakes and home fries. We make steaks, chops, chicken cutlets....just about anything. I grill up veggies for pizza on this thing. We made a skirt steak last week and it was as good as one cooked on the Weber. after eating non-stick surface for years, I'll never ever go back to non-stick. It's useless and doesn't last. This griddle will last forever. It's a quick learning process as to how to maintain your cast iron. It's worth the effort.
